Blurb:

A sweeping saga of long-lost love, a mysterious painting, an unspeakable tragedy and the beach bungalow at the center of it all …

In the summer of 1942, newly engaged Anne Calloway sets off to serve in the Army Nurse Corps on the Pacific island of Bora-Bora. More exhilarated by the adventure of a lifetime than she ever was by her predictable fiancé, she is drawn to a mysterious soldier named Westry, and their friendship soon blossoms into hues as deep as the hibiscus flowers native to the island. Under the thatched roof of an abandoned beach bungalow, the two share a private world-until they witness a gruesome crime, Westry is suddenly redeployed, and the idyll vanishes into the winds of war.

A timeless story of enduring passion, The Bungalow chronicles Anne’s determination to discover the truth about the twin losses–of life, and of love–that have haunted her for seventy years.

Blurb:

“From the New York cupcake wars to the perfect Parisian macaron, Thomas’s passion is palpable, her sweet tooth, unstoppable.”—Elizabeth Bard, bestselling author of Lunch in Paris

Forever a girl obsessed with all things French, sweet freak Amy Thomas landed a gig as rich as the purest dark chocolate: leave Manhattan for Paris to write ad copy for Louis Vuitton. Working on the Champs-Élysées, strolling the charming streets, and exploring the best patisseries and boulangeries, Amy marveled at the magnificence of the City of Light.

But does falling in love with one city mean turning your back on another? As much as Amy adored Paris, there was part of her that felt like a humble chocolate chip cookie in a sea of pristine macarons. PARIS, MY SWEET explores how the search for happiness can be as fleeting as a salted caramel souffle’s rise, as intensely satisfying as molten chocolate cake, and about how the life you’re meant to live doesn’t always taste like the one you envisioned.

Only this year, Bella has more on her mind than sunbathing and skinny-dipping with her girlfriends. She’s quit her job, put her house on the market, and sworn off relationships while she builds a new life in her favorite place on earth. That is, until good-time Bella’s prank takes a bad turn and a sinfully sexy police officer appears on the scene.

Single father and police officer Caden Grant left Boston with his fourteen-year-old son, Evan, after his partner was killed in the line of duty. He hopes to find a safer life in the small resort town of Wellfleet, and when he meets Bella during a night patrol shift, he realizes he’s found the one thing he’d never allowed himself to hope for–or even realized he was missing.

After fourteen years of focusing solely on his son, Caden cannot resist the intense attraction he feels toward beautiful Bella, and Bella’s powerless to fight the heat of their budding romance. But starting over proves more difficult than either of them imagined, and when Evan gets mixed up with the wrong kids, Caden’s loyalty is put to the test. Will he give up everything to protect his son–even Bella?

6. Instalove at the Pyramids: An Instalove Possessive Romance by Katy Winters

Blurb:

The Alpha Male Author and the Shy Curvy Girl

Aina:
My name is Aina, and it means “Priceless” in Egyptian.
I’m living abroad in Cairo as I work on my history degree.
I prefer showing tourists my little museum and minding my own business.
I’m used to going home alone to my cat, Webster, and studying.
But one day, a strong, muscular man with piercing brown eyes comes into my museum and doesn’t leave until I agree to a date.
He’s gorgeous—he’s an author, looks like a body builder, and seems interested in me.
I can’t stop thinking about him—and he comes back, wanting more.
Can I trust him with my shy heart?
And what would it mean to be his?

David:
As an author, I travel a lot for inspiration and book signings.
I see a lot of beautiful girls everywhere I go, and it’s nothing new to see them smile and laugh.
Until I see her.
The curvy girl at the museum I wander into in Cairo.
She’s beautiful, and I can tell that behind the tour guide is a quiet girl just begging to be protected.
When I ask her out to dinner, I already know what’s going to happen.
She may not know it yet, but she’s going to be mine.

7. Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson

Blurb:

From the Flying Start author of Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour comes a powerful novel about hope in the face of heartbreak.

Taylor Edwards’s family might not be the closest-knit—everyone is a little too busy and overscheduled—but for the most part, they get along just fine. Then, Taylor’s dad gets devastating news, and her parents decide that the family will spend one last summer all together at their old lake house in the Pocono Mountains.

Crammed into a place much smaller and more rustic than they are used to, they begin to get to know each other again. And Taylor discovers that the people she thought she had left behind haven’t actually gone anywhere. Her former best friend is still around, as is her first boyfriend—and he’s much cuter at seventeen than he was at twelve.

As the summer progresses and the Edwards become more of a family, they’re more aware than ever that they’re battling a ticking clock. Sometimes, though, there is just enough time to get a second chance with family, with friends, and with love.

8. Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter

702ea7bbc57df17afda54724203cbeae

Blurb:

The #1 New York Times bestseller, now available in paperback—Jess Walter’s “absolute masterpiece” (Richard Russo, Pulitzer Prize-winning author): the story of an almost-love affair that begins on the Italian coast in 1962 and resurfaces fifty years later in contemporary Hollywood.

The acclaimed, award-winning author of the national bestseller The Financial Lives of the Poets returns with his funniest, most romantic, and most purely enjoyable novel yet. Hailed by critics and loved by readers of literary and historical fiction, Beautiful Ruins is the story of an almost-love affair that begins on the Italian coast in 1962…and is rekindled in Hollywood fifty years later.

9. The Salt House by Lisa Duffy

4b45782926b8384f6aae0ff3c3bdd14a

Blurb:

In the tradition of Jodi Picoult and Lisa Genova, this gorgeously written, heartbreaking, yet hopeful debut set during a Maine summer traces the lives of a young family in the aftermath of tragedy.

In the coastal town of Alden, Maine, Hope and Jack Kelly have settled down to a life of wedded bliss. They have a beautiful family, a growing lobster business, and the Salt House—the dilapidated oceanfront cottage they’re renovating into their dream home. But tragedy strikes when their young daughter doesn’t wake up from her afternoon nap, taking her last breath without making a sound.

A year later, each member of the Kelly family navigates the world on their own private island of grief. Hope spends hours staring at her daughter’s ashes, unable to let go. Jack works to the point of exhaustion in an attempt to avoid his crumbling marriage. Their daughters, Jess and Kat, struggle to come to terms with the loss of their younger sister while watching their parents fall apart.

When Jack’s old rival, Ryland Finn, threatens his fishing territory, he ignites emotions that propel the Kelly family toward circumstances that will either tear them apart—or be the path to their family’s future.

Told in alternating voices, The Salt House is a layered, emotional portrait of marriage, family, friendship, and the complex intersections of love, grief, and hope.

10. Blood, Bones and Butter by Gabrielle Hamilton

Blurb:

Before Gabrielle Hamilton opened her acclaimed New York restaurant Prune, she spent twenty hard-living years trying to find purpose and meaning in her life. Blood, Bones & Butter follows an unconventional journey through the many kitchens Hamilton has inhabited through the years: the rural kitchen of her childhood, where her adored mother stood over the six-burner with an oily wooden spoon in hand; the kitchens of France, Greece, and Turkey, where she was often fed by complete strangers and learned the essence of hospitality; Hamilton’s own kitchen at Prune, with its many unexpected challenges; and the kitchen of her Italian mother-in-law, who serves as the link between Hamilton’s idyllic past and her own future family—the result of a prickly marriage that nonetheless yields lasting dividends. By turns epic and intimate, Gabrielle Hamilton’s story is told with uncommon honesty, grit, humor, and passion.

I hope you like this list of summer vibes books. I can’t wait for summer now.

  1. I debated including one of Melissa Foster’s books, many have a summer feel to their covers. But that flower on the cover of The Bungalow is by far my favorite of those you listed. Great list.

  2. Summer is actually my least favorite season because of the HEAT. Ugh! I do enjoy a good summery read, though. THE BUNGALOW definitely has that kind of vibe. I didn’t love it, unfortunately, although the Hawaiian setting was fun to read about. I’ve never heard of THE SALT HOUSE, but I’m going to add it to my TBR list. Sounds like one I’d like.
    Happy TTT!
